Tracking down the Weather Trio requires significant story progression in Roria alongside high-level battles. Hunting these titans serves as a major milestone among legendary locations, demanding specific items and party members before each encounter becomes accessible.
Prerequisites for the Weather Trio
Before seeking out any member of the trio, collect your gym badges. In the walkthrough by Zero on YouTube, having all eight gym badges is required to proceed, alongside a team leveled above 80 to manage high-level trainers. Stocking Max Repels prevents wild spawns from disrupting your movement through caves and sea routes.
Capturing these legendaries requires sturdy Poké Balls. Players can purchase Master Balls for 500,000 Poké Dollars at the Poké Ball Emporium inside Anthian City. Active codes occasionally grant free Poké Balls, saving money during preparation. Before challenging Sebastian or summiting Sky Pillar, completing your team's EV training prevents unexpected knockouts against high-stat bosses.
Catching Groudon in Mount Igneus
Fly to Brimber City to begin the quest for Groudon. Enter the Brimber Gym and challenge gym leader Sebastian to a rematch. Sebastian uses Fire-type Pokémon, making Water-type attackers effective counters. Kyogre or another high-tier Water Pokémon can sweep his lineup. Save your game directly in front of Sebastian so a defeat does not force you to repeat the gym parkour course.
Defeating Sebastian awards the Red Orb. Take the Red Orb out of the gym and travel along Route 6 into Mount Igneus. Inside the volcano, proceed to the altar previously used by Team Eclipse. Save your game before approaching the shrine. Interact with the altar to summon Groudon and begin the encounter.
Locating Kyogre in Ocean's Origin
Catching Kyogre starts by flying to Crescent Island. Leave the settlement and surf onto Route 17. The water on Route 17 contains submerged trainers that you can avoid by positioning your character behind them as they face forward.
Enter the cave opening along the route to step inside Ocean's Origin. Walk deep into the cavern until Kyogre appears sitting near the water edge. Save your file before interacting with the sprite to ensure you can retry if an accidental critical hit knocks Kyogre out. Click Kyogre to start the battle.
Ascending Sky Pillar for Rayquaza
Rayquaza requires both Groudon and Kyogre in your active party. Without both legendaries present, the encounter cannot occur. Fly to Port Bianca and enter the building to the left of the docks to purchase the Tropics ticket. Players who already own the ticket can bypass the counter.
Speak to the sailor at the dock, select the dive option, and choose Sky Pillar. Surf directly to the structure entrance. Inside Sky Pillar, walk behind the roaming trainers on the ground and second floor to bypass battles. Climb the ladders toward the roof. The final ladder has a collision hitch; climb steadily without sprinting, then sprint once blocked to move past the barrier. Save at the top before walking forward, as stepping toward the platform immediately triggers Rayquaza.
Weather Trio Encounter Comparison
| Legendary Pokémon | Encounter Location | Key Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Groudon | Mount Igneus Altar | Red Orb earned from Sebastian rematch in Brimber Gym |
| Kyogre | Ocean's Origin via Route 17 | Access to Crescent Island and Route 17 cave entrance |
| Rayquaza | Sky Pillar Summit | Tropics ticket with both Groudon and Kyogre in active party |
Activating Primal Forms and Mega Rayquaza
Transforming Groudon and Kyogre requires their respective orbs. Sebastian provides the Red Orb after his rematch. To acquire the Blue Orb, place all three members of the Weather Trio into your party and fly to Rustboro Beach. Walk to the lighthouse where Kyogre was encountered earlier in the story and speak with Tess's grandfather. He hands over the Blue Orb upon conversation.
Open your bag and give the Red Orb to Groudon as a held item, then give the Blue Orb to Kyogre. Holding these items causes both Pokémon to automatically enter Primal Reversion when entering battle.
Unlike standard forms tracked across Mega Stone locations, Rayquaza transforms through a learned move. Fly to the Battle Frontier and speak with the Move Reminder NPC. Teach Rayquaza the move Dragon Ascent. With Dragon Ascent in its movepool, a Mega Evolution button appears on the battle interface, allowing Rayquaza to Mega Evolve on command.
